He Descended into Hell: What Jesus Carried for You

Good Friday

Following Jesus isn’t always easy.

As we walk with Jesus through Holy Week, we find ourselves descending into Hell. But as we begin to descend, Jesus, the good shepherd turns to us and says,

“Stop. You can go no further. I will see you on the other side.”

“Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’

John 13:33 NASB

Isaiah the prophet put it this way,

“Our griefs, He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried.” Isaiah 53:4 NASB

When Jesus descended into Hell, He went alone; though, He was not alone when He got there.

For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,

1 Peter 3:18-19 NASB

The Psalmist asked,

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?

Or where can I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, You are there;

If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.

If I take the wings of the dawn,

If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,

Even there Your hand will lead me,

And Your right hand will lay hold of me.

If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night,’

Even darkness is not dark to You and the night is as bright as the day.

Darkness and light are alike to you.”

Psalm 139:7-12 NASB

The story of Good Friday is the story of God making Himself low to bear ALL of our burdens, shame, sin, regret, curses, failures, rebellion, violence, hatred, and bitterness.

He became nothing to give us everything.

He endured Hell to give us Heaven.

He loved the world so much, that He gave Himself, so that all who believe in Him will not perish but have the life of the age to come (John 3:16).

Take a minute to stand in awe of the God who descended into Hell for you.

He is worthy of our worship.

No matter what you are carrying, give it to Jesus and He will nail it to the cross for you.

It is finished.
